Celebrating World Bipolar Day in Thailand

In Thailand, where the concept of WBD was born, two main public education activities were held in Bangkok and in Songkhla in Southern Thailand.  In Bangkok, the ANBD  joined with 6 Thai organizations that included the Psychiatric Association of Thailand (PAT), Thai Society for Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry (TSGN), Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists Society of Thailand, Thai society of Affective  Disorders (TSAD), Bipolar Friend Club, and Thai Chapter of the World Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR).  It was held on 27 March 2014 at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel on the theme of “stable Mood, Good Life”.

Prof. Pichet Udomratn, chair of ANBD,  gave the opening remarks.  Many topics on bipolar disorder were presented such as the symptoms of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, in adults, and in elderly persons.  The speakers were Assoc. Prof. Suwanna Arunpongpaisal, Assoc. Prof. Sirichai Hongsa-nguansri, and Dr. Pichai Ittasakul. Moreover, a bipolar patient and caregiver were also invited to be speakers to share their experiences with the participants. This educational activity received much attention from the audience who asked the speakers many questions and it also received attention from the leading local newspaper (Kom Chad Luek) and TV (Channel 3) of Thailand to interview the speakers and report this activity.
 
 
The second activity was held on 30 March 2014 at Songkhla Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital on the theme of “Bipolar Disorder : Knowing, Understanding and Treating”. The Speakers were Prof. Pichet Udomratn and Dr. Chookiat Yongpitayapong  Patients who participated in this activity were actively involved by answering questions related to the topic and received souvenirs for correctly  responding.
 
 
Moreover, many radio stations in Bangkok broadcasted live interviews with the Thai psychiatrists on the topic of bipolar disorder such as Jor Sor 100 Radio interviewed Dr. Prakarn Thomyangkoon on 21 March 2014 and the radio station of Chulalongkorn University interviewed Prof. Pichet Udomratn on 31 March 2014.
